Revit for Mac: Parallels, viewers and alternatives
By Tiago Almeida · Updated 30 October 2026
There's no Mac version of Revit. Autodesk makes Revit and Revit LT for Windows only, so on a Mac you can run Windows alongside macOS, look at Revit work in a viewer, or use a BIM app that runs on the Mac. This guide covers each one, including what Autodesk itself supports.
We don't sell Revit or any of the alternatives below. We do make DWG Viewer, a Mac app that opens the DWF and DWG files Revit exports, so weigh that in where it comes up.
Is there a Revit for Mac?
No. Autodesk's support article says plainly that Revit doesn't have a native Mac version, and the same goes for Revit LT. From the 2027 release, both need 64-bit Windows 11.
Running Revit in Parallels
Autodesk's system requirements for Revit 2027 include a setup for Apple computers. It recommends Parallels Desktop running Windows 11, on macOS 13.7 or later, with an Intel Mac or any Apple silicon chip. The Mac needs 32 GB of memory, with 16 GB of it given to Windows.
Autodesk also says accelerated graphics aren't supported in Parallels, and it makes no promises about Revit in a virtual machine, so if something goes wrong, support may ask you to reproduce it on a real PC. On Apple silicon, the Arm version of Windows 11 runs Revit through its built-in emulation for Intel apps, which costs some speed.
People who use it say small and medium projects run well enough, even on an M4 MacBook Air, while large models feel slow and add-ins that rely on Windows drivers may not work. Parallels' own guide says much the same. Open your heaviest model during the free trial before you commit. On top of Revit, you'll need a Parallels subscription and a Windows 11 licence.
Boot Camp and remote Windows
On an Intel Mac, Boot Camp installs Windows next to macOS, and you restart to switch between them. Macs with Apple silicon can't use it, and Boot Camp only supports Windows 10, which Revit 2027 no longer runs on, so it only suits older releases.
The other way is to run Revit on a Windows computer somewhere else and use it from the Mac. That can be a workstation in the office over Remote Desktop, a Citrix setup, or a cloud PC with a graphics card, such as Windows 365's GPU Cloud PCs. Autodesk's support article lists remote access as an option.
What Revit costs
Revit is only sold as a subscription. In October 2026, Autodesk's US prices were:
| Product | Per year | Month to month | What it is |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revit | $3,005 | $380 | The full BIM app |
| Revit LT | $560 | $70 | A simpler, cheaper Revit, also Windows-only |
| AEC Collection | $3,675 | $460 | Revit with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Navisworks and more |
Prices change, so check Autodesk's store before you buy.
Viewing Revit models without Revit
Many Mac users in a Revit office never model. They need to check a plan, take a measurement or look round a 3D view, and that doesn't need Revit.
Autodesk Viewer is free and runs in the browser. Sign in with an Autodesk account and upload the .rvt file, and you can turn the model around, open its sheets and measure. Uploads are kept for 30 days unless you extend them, and the model goes to Autodesk's servers. If your office keeps its projects in Autodesk Docs, which Autodesk renamed Forma Data Management in 2026, you can open the models there in the browser as well.
Or ask for an export. Revit publishes sheets and 3D views as DWF or DWFx files, saves sheets as PDF, and exports views to DWG and DXF. A PDF opens in Preview. DWG Viewer, our app, opens the DWF, DWFx, DWG and DXF files: a DWF set shows every sheet and 3D view in a sidebar, and Finder shows thumbnails of them all. It costs $19 once and can't open .rvt files. There's more in How to open .dwf and .dwfx files on a Mac.
Mac BIM apps instead of Revit
These apps run natively on the Mac, and each can bring in some Revit files directly. None of them lists Revit 2027 files yet, so for the newest models, swap them through IFC, the open BIM format that Revit and all three can export and import.
- Archicad, from Graphisoft, has been a Mac app since the 1980s. It imports Revit families, can link a Revit 3D view into a project, and can export RVT files. Plans start at about $2,400 a year in the US.
- Vectorworks Architect imports and references Revit files from Revit 2011 to 2026 directly. It's a subscription of about $1,500 a year.
- BricsCAD BIM runs natively on Apple silicon from version 27 and imports Revit files from 2015 to 2025. Bricsys sells it as a subscription or a perpetual licence.
Which should I use?
- Modelling in Revit every day: a Windows PC, or Revit in Parallels for smaller projects.
- Large models, or Windows add-ins your office relies on: a Windows workstation, at your desk or reached remotely.
- Looking at models and sheets other people send: Autodesk Viewer for .rvt files, or DWG Viewer for the DWF and DWG files Revit exports.
- Designing BIM projects on a Mac: Archicad or Vectorworks.
